Mantorville's Beatle Bash
By Steve Lange
Listen. Do you want to know a secret?
Mantorville’s Beatle Bash is getting better, a little better all the time
“The Beatles are still relevant today, even after 40 years,” says Hubbell House owner and
Beatle Bash founder Don Pappas. “They are still the pinnacle of classic rock.”
And while few would argue that, this is still stunning: Just a quick Internet search turns up 150-plus U.S.-based Beatles tribute bands, with names ranging from Beatle Juice to The Beatlettes (an all-female group) to the Beatless (whose additional ‘s’ completely changes everything).
On August 1, the fifth annual Beatle Bash--to be held in the parking lot of the old Relay Station (421 Clay St.) in Mantorville—will be headlined by
The Cavern Beat, an Illinois-based Beatles tribute band that Pappas describes as “one of the best Beatle tribute bands around—and I’ve seen a lot of them.”
Starting at 5 p.m. (gates open at 4 p.m.), the estimated 1,000 to-be-attendees will see a pair of popular local bands—Fat Lemon then Lost Faculties—mix in their share of Beatle covers with Fat Lemon’s rock/funk/folk and Lost Faculties’ rock staples (like the ‘g’-less “Good Lovin’” and “Gimme Some Lovin’”). At 9 p.m.-ish, The Cavern Beat—and their name, a reference to the Cavern Club, a Beatles’ hotspot from their early days, gives away their 1958-1965 focus—bring their mop tops and collarless suits to the stage.
