Mum's the word

Bunny’s Coconut Cake at Canadian Honker is a local legend. It’s been on the menu at the Honker since the restaurant opened in 1985, and is named for Bunny Powers, the mother of owners Joe and Cris Powers. “She made the coconut cake at their home when they were growing up,” says manager Jesse Berg. “The recipe is highly guarded. All I can tell you is there is coconut on top. It’s a very moist and sweet coconut cake ... it just melts in your mouth. It is just that good,” says Berg, noting that Bunny still works at the restaurant a few days a week.

By the numbers: The restaurant sells roughly 50 pieces of Bunny’s Coconut Cake per day. “Some regulars come in just for the cake,” Berg notes.

Berg’s favorites: “The coconut cake is definitely my first choice, but I also like our peanut butter pie.”

The Canadian Honker: 1201 Second St. SW, 282-6572.
