The Ultimate Outdoor Adventure Guide

Set Sail

By Anna Stevens

The Adventure: Join Captain Steve Richardt on Lake Pepin for active sailing lessons or a relaxing sunset cruise. A retired Rochester city firefighter with more than 30 years of sailing experience, the Captain knows the area well. The Windward High sailing boat is a 30-foot Cape Dory Cutter that is a great vessel on which to learn basic boat and sail handling techniques. The Captain says while everyone learns at different speeds, most people need a few lessons to feel comfortable going out on their own in a smaller boat. Captain Richardt’s sunset sailing cruises are for up to six passengers, offering a more relaxing way to set sail.

Light Up The Night: Windward High Sailing sails whenever you want. “We are open to sail seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” says Captain Richardt. “Even in the dark. Sunset cruises are especially exciting on nights with full moons.”

What You Pay: First four-hour lesson, up to four students, $300; following lessons, $250 each. Two hour sunset cruises, $150; each additional hour, $50.
